San Girolamo Library

The San Girolamo complex, established in the 15th century as the seat of the Gerolamini congregation and subsequently rebuilt in the 18th century to a design by architect Giuseppe Tosi, underwent numerous functional transformations over time, eventually serving as a judicial prison from the late 19th century. Decommissioned in the 1980s and later acquired by the University of Urbino “Carlo Bo,” the building became the subject of a redevelopment project aimed at adapting its spaces for academic research and study.

Within this context, the completion works for the expansion of the San Girolamo Library, carried out by Torelli Dottori S.p.A., involved the renovation and upgrading of the former prison building. The intervention addressed both the existing masonry structures and the internal spaces and courtyards, with works aimed at restoring usability and enhancing the architectural character of the complex.

The works included interventions on the brick masonry, with consolidation and integration operations, as well as the refurbishment of floors and internal paving through reinforced concrete screeds, followed by the installation of finishes consistent with the historic context. Particular attention was also given to the recovery of vaulted spaces and circulation areas, preserving the legibility of the original spatial organization.

The construction activities were carried out in a context of high operational complexity, due to the presence of historic structures and the need to integrate new technological and building systems within the existing fabric. The adopted solutions made it possible to restore functionality to the spaces while ensuring respect for the architectural features and compatibility with the existing structures, in line with the new use for university activities.
