International Label Museum

The intervention involved the restoration and enhancement of the spaces belonging to the International Label Museum, located within the grottoes of the Santa Caterina monastic complex.

The monastery was built in the early decades of the 18th century to a design by architect Arcangelo Vici da Palazzo di Arcevia (1698–1762), at the same time as the construction of the circular church topped by a high dome resting on eight Corinthian columns, opened to worship in 1751. The underground structures form an articulated system of grottoes and tunnels carved into the sandstone, connected to the convent’s subterranean spaces and originally likely linked to other underground routes, possibly used as escape passages in the event of a siege of the castle. These spaces, which can be interpreted as true foundation walls, appear to incorporate structures predating the construction of the monastery, including sections of the castle walls and annexes of the former monasteries of Santa Marta and Maddalena, once located within the castle enclosure in the area corresponding to today’s San Lorenzo small theater.
